Earthquake Alert: Tremors felt in several regions as 3.8 magnitude hits J&K's Kupwara

Earthquake News, Richter Scale Magnitude, Epicentre: An earthquake of 3.8 magnitude struck the Kupwara region in Jammu and Kashmir at 8:47 pm on Sunday, February 23.

The epicentre of the quake was Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir. 

Tremors were felt in several regions in the northern parts of the country.

At the time of publishing this report, the extend of the damage could not be ascertained immediately.

According to information released by the National Center for Seismology (NCS), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, the tremor occurred at 8:47 pm with the  epicentre traced to latitude 34.28°N and longitude 74.00°E, at a depth of 10 kilometres.

The National Center for Seismology is the nodal national agency for monitoring earthquake activity in the country. 

It maintains a seismological network spanning more than 160 stations, monitoring earthquake activity across the country.

Earthquake activity is measured using devices known as seismometers, which detect and record data on ground vibrations created by seismic waves. 

Typically, the magnitude of an earthquake is measured on the Richter scale, which calculates the logarithm of the wave's amplitude. 

Richter scale readings range from 0 to 10, with higher numbers indicating greater magnitude.
