Decoded! Hong Kong special status to be ended by US? Anil Singhvi explains

Hong Kong, an erstwhile British colony, has been in the  news for weeks now over actions taken by the Chinese government that has been objected to by the US, with President Donald Trump even going as far as to say its special status may be revoked. However, US action on the special status of Hong Long is unlikely to happen anytime soon, though there have been news of some action on this front, Zee Business Managing Editor Anil Singhvi said. The US has been facing its own share of problems including the recent unrest over racism, which has resulted in curfew in over 20 cities.

Singhvi said that he did not expect any action against China from the US under current circumstances, pointing out that there could be more talk from President Donald Trump, than action.

  Singhvi added that the US President has not been up to the mark on managing the affairs of the country that he leads.

 US is seeing protests against police brutality following the death of George Floyd in police custody. Singhvi said that the US, which talks about human rights violation in other countries often, has not been able to secure the same for its own citizens.

The country which prides itself for being the most civilised nation, has been facing a lot of problems on this front, he added.

Pointing to the growing number of coronavirus cases, Singhvi said that the situation was alarming in this front too in the US, as the president has failed to contain the spread of the disease. He said that there has been no appreciable decline in the number of cases in the country.

There is a sense that they have accepted this fact that they will be getting 20000-25000 cases daily, he averred. Can they take on China while having so many problems back home, Singhvi asked.

SInghvi, however, added that the US president has shown some restraint though, even as the country has been facing a lot of difficulties and more bad news is emerging from the country in comparison to the good ones.

Importantly, what is working for the US is the liquidity in the markets, Singhvi said which has kept the mood of the markets high.
